 Ballymacnab 0-11 Granemore 1-8

Our reserve side began their league campaign on Wednesday evening with a home tie against neighbours Granemore. The difficult weather conditions denied any opportunity for attractive football, causing several unforced errors for both teams. Granemore’s early opener was matched by a superb Benny Gribben effort while points from Pearse Hughes and Ryan Watters (free) made the score 0-3 to 0-1. Granemore levelled with 2 points in quick succession before Watters was again on target, splitting the posts with two more pointed frees. Granemore responded with a point of their own to narrow the gap but it was Ballymacnab who ended the half in brighter fashion with Hughes chipping over his second point of the evening after good defensive play by Barry Livingstone. This score sent the hosts 0-6 to 0-4 up at half time with the game still in the melting pot heading into the final 30 minutes of action.

Watters struck his 4th free at the beginning of the second period before the experienced heads of Joe Gribben and Brian McCone combined for Gribben to slot over his first score of the game, leaving the Nab in a commanding 4 point lead. Granemore replied with a score of their own while McCone got his name on the score sheet with a converted free. The visitors hit a period of dominance, scoring 1-3 without reply to go in front for the first time in the game with the score now 1-8 to 0-9. Once again Gribben and McCone stepped up to the mark with a point each to draw the game and earn their team a share of the spoils with the game ending Ballymacnab 0-11 Granemore 1-8.

A hard fought game for both sides with the end result perhaps a fair one. Ballymacnab’s defence held out well during the 60 minutes of the game, with Colm McKee and Caoimhin Rafferty the main men in the defensive third of the field. Joe Gribben was excellent throughout while Brian McCone and Tony McKee made telling contributions.
