Mullaghbawn 1-09 Ballymacnab 2-10

Despite horrible conditions for football our minors accounted for Mullaghbawn in the first round of the Championship in an exciting contest on Monday evening. The home side were quick off the mark with a point from the first attack before Conor Mackin got Ballymacnab off the mark with a well taking point on the 7th minute. This was followed up with a Conor Murdoch point before a Kieran Hughes goal on the 16th minute gave the ‘Nab an early cushioned lead. This was short lived as Mullaghbawn chipped over three unanswered points before an Aodhan Toner kept his side in the lead. However, the home side finished with a flurry and another three points put them in front and only a point blank save from Conor McGivern denied a certain goal.

Mullaghbawn continued their good form with a point in the early stages of the second half but points from Kieran Hughes, Conor Mackin and Aodhan Toner gave Ballymacnab the lead once more before a point for Mullaghbawn on 43rd minute left the sides level at 1-06 to 0-09. Aodhan Toner added another point before a goal for the home side edged them in front. However, Ballymacnab did not panic and finished strong with points from Aodhan Toner (2) and Stephen King to put them in front by one. With time almost up a brilliant Conor Leonard catch gave Ballymacnab the chance to extent there lead and when Kieran Hughes went one on one with goalkeeper he made no mistake in finishing the ball to the net for the second half, putting Ballymacnab four up and secured the victory on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-09.

Good performances all round with Fearghal Nugent and Ciaran Connolly outstanding in defence. Shane McCone went through a serious amount of work in midfield and Conor Leonard made a real difference when switch to the middle of the park. Upfront Kieran Hughes definitive goals were the telling scores of the game while Aodhan Toners long range points and frees were vital as was the contribution of substitute Stephen King who scored a great point and had a helping hand in setting up Kieran Hughes second goal. The lads will now meet Madden in the Quarter Final in a few weeks time.
