On Saturday 26 May, Ballymacnab Under 14s made the long journey to Drumsurn, Co. Derry to compete in Feile Uladh 2012.  The day started with a game against Castledawson and playing with a strong wind in the first half the Nab boys found it difficult to settle. Despite some good passages of play, chances were spurned and they found themselves 2-05 to a point down at half time.  In the second half the ‘Nab played excellent possession football against the wind and although they scored an impressive 1-05 Castledawson managed a few points and ultimately were winners.  A much improved second half performance for the ‘Nab.

The second game for the boys came immediately thereafter against a strong Dungiven side.  The ‘Nab boys settled in and played very well, working hard against the persistent strong breeze.  Time and time again they thwarted the Dungiven attack and carried the ball well, to turn defence into attack.  At half time Ballymacnab were 5 points down but still very much in the game.

With the wind in their back in the second half the ‘Nab were able to score some excellent long range points and were caught by a counter attack from Dungiven who scored a well taken goal against the run of play.  The boys however did not drop their heads and responded with a superb goal leaving a 3 point margin with 2 minutes to go.  A missed chance from a well worked move left both sides very nervous and one last kickout from Dungiven was claimed by the ‘Nab boys who worked the ball in with a series of fist passes ending with a placed shot to the back of the net apparently earning a draw.  Strangely however the referee blew the full time whistle as the ball was struck and disallowed the goal.  A narrow but disputable defeat.

Although extremely disappointed the ‘Nab went into their last game feeling very confident.  Playing against the persistent strong wind in the first half they played the better football and but for some missed opportunities should have been well ahead.  Again caught by some effective counterattacking they went into the break four points down.  In the second half they regrouped and scored some excellent long range points and a goal to secure victory with the narrowest of margins.  A well deserved win ending the day on a positive note.

All had an excellent day and the players represented the club and county in an exemplary manner both on and off the field. All are fully deserving of a mention for the part they played in a fantastic day of football. They were Sean Owen Curry and Lee McParland (Goals), Conor Dougan, Oisin Dougan, Tiarnán Smyth, Lorcan McGivern, Conor Gribben, Dara Mc Ardle, Kyle Gallagher (defence) Caoimhin Rafferty and Niall Mc Kee (midfield), Ryan Watters (Capt), Conor O’Hanlon, Pearse Hughes, Conor Lynch, Shane O’Hanlon, Micheal Gribben, Owen Crilly and Fearghal O’Hanlon ( forwards).

Thanks must go to the host club Drumsurn for their kind hospitality throughout the day and to the Ballymacnab management team of Liam King, Seamus Mc Ardle, Colin Mc Kee and Sean Lynch (Physio).  A good number of parents and supporters travelled which was very much appreciated by all. This was a most enjoyable and memorable experience for all these young players who were the first team from Ballymacnab Round Towers to take part in an Ulster Feile Competition.
