Madden 1-11 Ballymacnab 3-10

The minors travelled to Madden on Monday evening knowing only a win could keep alive any chance of retaining their league title. Having bowed out to the same opposition just seven days ago in the Championship the players and management were determined to not go out without a fight.

A Jack Grugan pointed a free within the first minute to get the scoring under way. Madden responded with a point of their own before Kieran Hughes intercepted a Madden attack and bore down in goal, firing a shot to the back of the net. Jack Grugan collected another point from a free before Conor Mackin fired home another goal. From the resulting kick out the 'Nab went on the attack once more and when Finnén Maguire's initial shot was stopped by the 'keeper, Conor Mackin was on hand to convert the rebound to the net for his second goal. Madden hit back with a number of points but the excellent Kieran Hughes responded with two of his own to leave Ballymacnab leading 3-05 to 0-07 at the break.

Aodhan Toner increased the lead with a point after the restart. Madden responded with 1-2 in quick succession but two points from captain Jack Grugan kept his side in front. As the game reached a conclusion Ballymacnab were awarded a penalty. Jack Grugan stepped up and sensibly tapped the ball over the bar for an insurance point, although Madden hit back with a point, Grugan was on hand to stroke over another point. An all round fine team display led from the front by Conor McGivern who pulled off a number of crucial saves. In defence the 'Nab were on top with Ciaran Connolly and Barry Livingstone putting in a good display as did Finnén Maguire in the middle. Up front Jack Grugan and Kieran Hughes showed great accuracy on the scoreboard. The result puts the lads two points clear at the top of the league with all their games completed and await the result of Madden/St.Peter’s to determine the title which may go to a play off should Madden win.
