Gallant effort by seniors (31/07/11)

On Sunday our seniors travelled to a damp Crossmaglen for our second game of the weekend. The Nab put in a tremendous effort over the hour when they stood up to the battle against the home side, that sometimes were over the top to say the least.

The Nab got off to a flying start when on the 4th minute James Grays trademark dash through the defence ended with a goal to the top corner. Rory Grugan followed up with a point three minute later. Cross immediately responded hitting a goal for their first score of the game but the Nab did not let this deter them and by the 20th minute lead 1-04 to 1-0 with points from Ryan Kennedy, Rory Grugan (free) and Pauric Gribben. By this stage midfielder Richard Gribben had to retire injured after a high challenge as the home side hit back with 1-2 in quick response. Once again the Nab were forced to make a change when Michael Beagan was on the receiving end of a horrific injury that burly went unpunished and we wish Michael a speedy recovery. A pointed free from Rory Grugan two minutes from the break left the sides level at 2-02 to 1-05.

In the opening period of the second half Crossmaglen used all their experience to grind down the gutsy Nab side and a goal on the 40th minute added by a succession of points edged them infront despite being reduced to 13 men. The Nab could not capitalise on the player advantage and it wasn’t until a Joe Gribben goal on the 52nd minute that raised the supporter’s voices. Once again Crossmaglen responded with two quick points and a Gavin McParland on the 61st minute was soon cancelled out also.

Despite their best efforts (an especially that of Kevin Beagan’s) the Nab put in a good performance over the hour against a more experience side and had also to withstand particular attention which unfortunately was not rightly dealt with until well into the second half. A few more performances like this will surely be enough for the Round Towers to maintain Division I status in this their maiden year.
