Our Seniors reached the Semi Final of the Championship for the 4th time in 7 years after a six goal thriller against Madden at the Athletic Grounds.

The game was played in horrid conditions after the recent spell of wet weather but both sides put that behind them and it wasn’t long until the first score, a point from Brian McCone. Madden quickly responded with a point before a Paul Kennedy point gave the ‘Nab the lead once more, after some good play from Michael Beagan. The first goal of the game came shortly afterwards when a ‘mark’ from Pauric Gribben set him up on a solo run and whilst his initial attempt for a point was dealt by the ‘keeper, he seemed to fumble the ball. Jack Grugan showed great incint to follow the ball in and find the net. This score was short lived when Madden rose the green flag moments later. Almost immediedatly, our lads dusted themselves down once more and an inch perfect pass from Rory Grugan to his brother Jack with Jack rattling the net for the second time. Just when Ballymacnab seemed to be pulling away, Madden reduced the deficit with another goal, to leave the score at 2-04 to 2-01. During this set play Ballymacnab lost full back Brendan Toner to injury and saw the game stopped for 11 minutes. At the restart the inform Jack Grugan once again split the posts and that score was quickly followed by another Paul Kennedy point. Just before half time, Madden showed their resolve with another free to leave the ‘Nab leading at the break 2-06 to 3-02

In the second half Ballymacnab once again started the brightest with the Grugan brother linking up for Rory’s second point of the game. As before, when the ‘Nab looked to be getting a grasp of the game, the opposition were given a lifeline and awarded a penalty on the 3rd minute of the second half. The shot was converted to the net as Madden retained the lead and added to this lead with a brace of points. However, the ‘Nab soon closed the gap with the Grugan brothers again coming to the fore, scoring a point each. A turnover produced another counter attack for Madden with their attacker splitting the posts. This however would be Madden’s final score until the 29th minute as Ballymacnab began to find their feet. Rory Grugan set up Gavin McParland for a point before another Michael Beagan turnover led to McParland kicking his second in 4 minutes. The ‘Nab were now in a roll and won the resulting restart, providing the chance for Jack Grugan to score again. Brian McCone then nudged his side in front with a point before Madden leveled once again. With the sides level and now entering the injury time, Jack Grugan once more stood up to drive his side to victory, his effort sailing proving to be the winning score.

In an amazing game the swung back and forth our lads showed great composer and experience, particularly in the final quarter of the game. Jack Grugan produced a tremendous performance, closely followed by the hard working Michael Beagan and Pauric Gribben who all contributed so much to guide their side to victory.
