RESERVE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Ballymacnab 2-11 Sarsfields 1-13

Ballymacnab Reserves created another little piece of Club History on Tuesday evening by winning the Senior Reserve Championship for the first time. In a dramatic late finish, Ballymacnab secured the victory with a winning pointed free from 17 year old Oisin McGivern. Very little could separate the sides throughout with a gallant Sarsfields side gracious in defeat.

At a bright and sunny Athletic Grounds, Ballymacnab got off to a whirlwind start with Brian McClelland, Kieran Hughes (free) and Fearghal Nugent all registering points within the first five minutes. Sarsfields got off the mark with a pointed free on the 11th minute but a minute later came the first goal of the game when Kieran Hughes cut through the Sarsfields defence, before unloading to Fearghal Nugent who found the net. Sarsfields went on to dominate the next stage of the game with five unanswered points to level matters after 17 minute of play. A pointed free from Kieran Hughes was cancelled by a point for the High Moss men but an excellent individual point from Kieran Hughes gave Ballymacnab a 1-5 to 0-7 lead at the break.

In the second half it was Sarsfields who started best hitting two unanswered points before finishing with a goal on the 36th minute but a Gareth Watters settled Ballymacnab nerves with a well taken point that was quickly followed by Kieran Hughes pointed free. Sarsfields extended their lead with two points and led by four by the 47th minute. Prior to these scores the management introduced Paudi Beagan and Oisin McGivern to the play and both were to have a major influence on the game by the final whistle. The excellent Kieran Hughes kicked two points in between a pointed free by Oisin McGivern left just one between the sides by the 55th minute. To their credit Sarsfields withstood this Ballynacnab revival and a further point put them two ahead which looked to possibly be enough to carry them over the line. However, with full time approaching Ballymacnab made a surging attack. A catch from Ryan Beagan in midfield set up another attack and when Fearghal Nugent off loaded to the on rushing Brian McClelland, he fired his shot to the net. Sarsfields licked their wounds and launched another attack and their efforts were rewarded with a 21 meter free that they converted to leave matters all square. This entertaining game was to take one further twist with Ballymacnab going into the attack deep in injury time and after an initial foul on Fearghal Nugent, Oisin McGivern coolly stepped up and converted the winning score. The final whistle blew from the resulting kicking out to the delight of all Ballymacnab Gaels. Well done to all the players on their fantastic performance and 'never say die attitude' and to their management team of Neil McKee, Mickey McGivern and Paddy Murdoch. After the game, County Vice Chairperson Michael Geoghegan presented the cup to Captain Richard Gribben. Well done to all involved!
