Blistering sunshine was the setting for this vital Division I tie on Sunday in Pairc na nGael which produced a thrill contest.
The Round Towers got scoring proceedings underway, straight from the throw in when Richard Gribben set up Gavin McParland for a point, giving an early lead. This was short lived as the Hoops hit back with two unanswered points. Rory Grugan levelled matters on the 6th minute with a long range effort but once again Sarsfields responded with two points. Rory Grugan exchanged two points with the opposition but points from Gavin McParland and James Gray levelled matters on the 20th minute. By this stage the Nab to replace chief marksman, Brian McCone, due to injury. Sarsfields went back into the lead on the 26th minute after a dubious free decision but the Nab finished the half well and a Gary McKee free from an acute angel was followed by another from the boot of Rory Grugan to leave the Nab leading 0-8 to 0-7.
The Nab started the second half in brilliant fashion and points from James Gray, substitute Brian McClelland and Gavin McParland increased the lead. A converted penalty for the visitors on 38th minute reduced the deficit to one once again. Rory Grugan added another pointed free after a foul on James Gray and only an excellent save from keeper Sean Hughes denied the opposition with a second goal, at the expense of a point. On the 42nd minute the Nab went on the offence again and with Gavin McParland's miss hit and James Gray causing a diversion the ball ended up in the back of the net. Three minutes later the impressive Michael Beagan soared forward with a point to give his sides a five put lead. Despite Gary McKee dominating at midfield, Sarsfields hit back with three unanswered frees. Two quick points from Gavin McParland and Rory Grugan left the margin to four but again Sarsfields came back in time added on with three points and when the final whistle eventually came the lads had done enough to earn the victory.
This was an important win for the boys, particularly the way other results in the division went this weekend. Best on the day were Sean McArdle and Michael Beagan in defence, Gary McKee at midfield while in attack James Gray and Gavin McParland.
