Ballymacnab had to work hard to earn entry to Round 2 of the Qualifiers when they came up against a spirited Madden side on Sunday at the Athletic Grounds.

Madden got proceedings off to a start with a point in the first minute but a pointed free from Brian McCone two minutes later levelled matters. Madden hit the front once more with a point but this was short lived with two goals in as many minute from Pauric Gribben and Gavin McParland gave Ballymacnab the lead which they maintained throughout the remainder of the game. Tony McKee followed up with a point but five consecutive points from the opposition reduced the deficit to the minimum and only an excellent save from Sean Hughes kept out a certain goal. During this period of dominance Ballymacnab lost the influential Kevin Beagan to injury and all at the Club wish him a speedy recovery. Ballymacnab regrouped and points from Brian McCone, Tony McKee, Gavin McParland (2) and Dominic McParland gave them a 2-7 to 0-7 lead at the break.

Madden got right back into the game with goal 30 seconds from the restart but an excellent point from long range from Brendan Toner was a perfect response. Madden reduced the deficit to one again with three points in a row but Joe Gribben and Damien McGeown were on hand to keep the 'Nab in front with a point each. Madden continued to trouble the Round Towers and responded with a point before being awarded a penalty in the 44th minute. Sean Hughes read the situation well, diving to his left for an excellent save. Points from Rory Grugan and the economic Joe Gribben give the lads a four point cushion by the 54th minute. As expected Madden came back, hitting 2 points but the 'Nab held on and will now face the losers of Maghery and Whitecross in the next round, due to be played on the weekend of 5 September.
